American Icon: The Notorious RBG

Today, Saturday, September 19th 2020, is the first day that we sadly wake up to a world without Ruth Bader Ginsberg in it. A tiny woman in stature but not in ability or power. She’s been called a legend, a titan, a powerhouse, an icon, and an idol. She is all that and more. I cried when I heard that she had died and a deep sadness settled into my heart, which is quickly turning into fear. She seemed so indestructible and why wouldn’t she, as she had fought and won against cancer several times as well as other health issues. The Energizer Bunny had nothing on her. In the past couple of years, many of us would hold our collective breath when there was any mention of her health. Now, not only do we have to grapple with our own sadness that such a wonderfully caring, highly intelligent and empathetic woman who has fought for so many has died, but we have to grapple with the fear of what the GOP wants to do to this country.

RBG held on as long as humanly possibly to hopefully give us all a chance and I wonder how the weight of that contributed to her decline. My heart breaks that she died without the peace of knowing that we had sane, humane, intelligent, empathic leaders at the helm who would do what is right. She died, sadly, in the middle of a horrible pandemic with a horrible President and leader of the Senate, both who seem hell bent on destroying this country and the civil liberties that this woman has fought so hard to achieve. With all that she did for this country, even in her last few years on earth, she still had to worry about us and try to get us over the line.

I’m sure she knew like most of do that the GOP don’t give a shit about justice or civil rights or life. They have been working hard playing the long game to chip away at any and all progress we’ve made as a society. Their only goal is to put as many hardline judges on benches as possible, so they get the outcomes they want and we can’t fight against them or the horrible things will definitely do to us. They know what outcome they want and they are only interested in judges who will give it to them. That isn’t justice my friends that’s a fix. All they care about is power at any cost. However, we can discuss their treachery time. Right now, I want to talk about RBG and give her a big “THANK YOU. WE’LL MISS YOU AND WE LOVE YOU.”

If I could clone any one American, it would be her. She was an intelligent woman, a devoted and loving wife to a wonderful husband, and a great mother and grandmother. She was always willing to fight for others and for those she loved, and she always had their back. She helped her husband keep up with his law education while he was dealing with a health issue, along with taking her own classes. From all I’ve heard about her marriage with her husband, they truly did have an equal partnership. She helped him when he needed it and he supported her success fully. Not many relationships or marriages are true partnerships, but it seems to me that hers was a shining example of two people who were in love and who respected each other as individuals. #Relationshipgoals!

This woman barely missed any time on the bench during any of her battles with cancer or even when she lost her beloved Marty in 2010, and she did it all without complaint or fanfare. When she was interviewed you didn’t hear her bemoan her condition or try to martyr herself for her hard work. It wasn’t about her! How fucking refreshing, especially after the last four years. She did everything she could to ensure that we got as close as possible to the words that frame the documents we hold so dear “equal justice under the law.” She truly had a mission and a purpose in her life and all of us benefited from it.

I’m sure many of the idiots who are actively trying to destroy the Supreme Court and our democracy for their silly little religious beliefs are benefiting form her hard work and dedication to justice and social justice. I just wish many of them had the intelligence to realize it.

As a regular citizen in this country who never had the honor to meet this formidable woman I have loved seeing her iconic status grow. I love seeing young girls look up to her. It is refreshing considering how many vapid twats follow that Kardashian clan of attention whores. I love that she was nicknamed after the Notorious BIG, and I loved that she fully embraced it. She has action figures, and bumper stickers, T-shirts, as well as bib necklaces to mimic the ones she wore with her robes. You know you’ve arrived when you’ve got merch!

Woman, of all generations, understood that she was fighting for us and that not only was she on our side, she too had difficulties advancing in her own career because of gender based discrimination, so this was personal to her. However, unlike some people, she didn’t stop fighting once she got to the top. She didn’t just struggle to climb the ladder so she could open the door for herself only to close it behind her. Nope, she propped it open for so that all of us could walk through as well. She wanted to ensure that we kept that access and that we could build upon it. She wouldn’t have been content just to break glass ceilings for herself. It would have meant nothing if she was there alone.

She was small but she was mighty! And she had a huge heart. For anyone who knew her they only spoke about how kind and loving was she was. Hearing people talk about her only made me feel incredibly sad that I never met or even attended an event where she spoke. She’s the kind of person you know you missed out on. It’s hard to image a world that she isn’t in since she’s been watching over us for 50 years. I guess we should be happy to have had her this long. I know she she passed with surrounded by love and that makes me feel good.

I hope we will be o.k. but honestly I don’t know. I do know that we have her words and her dissents that can help guide us, and maybe, just maybe, those in the legal profession will do their best to step up and into her shoes and grow a fucking pair because we’ve got one hell of a fight.

Thank you RBG. We are thankful for all you’ve done for us and for your service to this country. You will be missed forever. People like you don’t come around all that often.

Rest in peace.

My cell phone tells me that Pelosi is threatening another impeachment if Republicans insist (as is their constitutional but not ethical right) on forcing through another Trump nominee. I did not think of that, what a good idea! I would hate to see more riots in the streets, they do more harm than good. However, the youth of this decade will be ashamed to tell their children they didn’t resist, if a dictator takes over.

They should push back especially since the Republicans stole Obama’s pick away. I don’t know if riots do more harm than good but what would be nice is if we had politicians who listened, then they wouldn’t be necessary. We forged this nation from blood and protest so I don’t think that will change. One thing Trump has done is he definitely has woken America up from the coma of convenience we’ve been in. We can’t fear our government if we are the ones shaping it. It’s time to wake up and rise up and stop being lazy. Democracy isn’t a spectator sport. And you’re right, generations to come will want to know what we did to stop a dictator.

Almost everybody I used to know, and most of my family, seem to have been turned into brainwashed Trumpist Christians. I saw a young girl at the local market’s register wearing an ANTIFA t-shirt. I had to warn her, people around here don’t tolerate that, she is honestly in danger of being raped, beat up and murdered. She had a snake tattoo on her arm. Brave young lady.

Yeah I probably would have said something to her as well. I have some family that are Trumpers. We don’t speak much right now. I love them but hate their beliefs.
